ANDROIDS!

Google Offices

Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario

2011 — 40'x12'

About this mural

After years of painting murals in children’s bedrooms, I was given the opportunity to create my first truly public mural through Google. The company issued a call for artists to paint a large-scale work for their Kitchener–Waterloo office, and following a competitive pitch process, I was selected to create ANDROIDS!.

The brief was intentionally open, with two requirements: the mural needed to incorporate the Google logo in a creative way and draw from a steampunk-inspired aesthetic. I responded by reimagining the Google name as a factory. A mechanical system producing Androids, referencing the development of the Android operating system in that very location.

Each letter in the logo connects seamlessly to the next, functioning as part of a larger machine, with the Android figures emerging from the final letter. The structure housing the factory is modeled after the historic Lang Tanning Building, where Google’s offices were located at the time, grounding the work in the architectural and industrial history of the region.

The resulting mural balances invention with place; blending technology, history, and imagination into a piece that reflects both the spirit of innovation and the character of its surroundings.
