About this mural

Sussex, the mural capital of Atlantic Canada, put out a mural call earlier this year, and I was selected to paint the gable end of St. Mark's Church. It's my first mural in Atlantic Canada, and hopefully the first of many.

Sussex grew up around the rail line. Trains once carried freight and passengers through the valley, and the town became a hub for the dairy farms that are still in the area today. New Brunswick has more covered bridges per capita than anywhere else in the country, and Sussex sits in the centre of it. I wanted the mural to represent all of it at once: the locomotive working its way through the landscape, a covered bridge in the foreground, and dairy cows grazing in the fields beyond. Rolling Through felt right for this theme.

On the third day of painting, a grade 4/5 class from the local school came by to help block in color. Handing over paintbrushes to a class of kids after I'd been painting alone for two days was a good reminder of why these murals matter. This wall belongs to the community, and having the children be part of it reinforces that fact.
